This is a recent project by Fulbrighter Gustavo Cardinal. Last year he began to promote the work of the Uruguayan composer Gustavo Britos Zunin, who has written seven symphonies, more than 30 piano pieces, one piano concerto, and chamber and vocal music. Despite the volume and quality of Britos’ production, these works are not adequately known in Uruguay and there are only a few recordings available. The goal of this continuing project is to record systematically the compositions that include piano, and thus help solidify and preserve their place in the Uruguayan cultural heritage. By virtue of the flowing communication of Cardinal with the composer, these recordings gather and reflect his ideas, and this interaction composer-performer becomes, in turn, part of the creative process. These recordings do not only present this music to the general public but also serve as reference for performers (both in Uruguay and abroad), who will surely develop an interest in these works. The Fulbright program has contributed immensely to Gustavo Cardinal having the opportunity and artistic level necessary to value, approach, and communicate this significant yet unexplored repertoire.
